It’s hard to find the perfect aquamarine color, but when you get it right, it can set the tone just right.

What I learned from painting a house black is that black gets dirty fast and shows every fingerprint or scuff mark. I also learned not to paint a metal shed.

I can’t wait to show you the next house I’m doing. It’s an exterior salt mill style of a home in Anacortes. We are painting it flat black, called “caviar” by Sherwin Williams. We use the same color, “caviar,” in a low luster to barely enhance the trim around windows, etc. It’s going to look filthy! Stay connected to see those pictures soon!

These pictures show the wear down of a semi-transparent stain and the differences between that and a paint product. The fences in these first two pictures are semi-transparent stains. It protects the wood to a degree, but I think people love the way it looks mostly. The third picture is a fence that has been painted as opposed to stained. It is superior for protection and less maintenance for you, but when it’s old, it will flake, blister, and peel like the brown fence in the picture. Looks like garbage, doesn’t it? So if you have any new construction like cedar shake or even a cedar fence, I think you could use a semi-transparent stain for the first 5-years, and when it’s time to renew the wood, you could switch to a solid body stain that won’t flake out.
